Wadis are a staple characteristic of the natural landscape on the Arabian Peninsula. The Arabic word for a ravine, channel or valley that is dry except in rainy season, it was this native feature that was preserved by six-time major champion and acclaimed course architect Sir Nick Faldo when he undertook a redesign project over a decade ago.
The Faldo course is the second championship layout at Emirates Golf Club but it does what all good second courses should do: it offers something unique. Winding around the perimeter of the property, the dried riverbed features are prominent from the very first hole and the hard pan sandy surfaces will test your ball-striking.
Some of the drop-offs and greenside features have been softened by the club to make what was once a difficult course more playable, but the Faldo has a wonderful mix of holes, from short par 4s to a fine collection of one-shotters.
Night golf on the Faldo is an essential part of the Dubai golf experience. With the lights of the Dubai Marina skyscrapers twinkling in the backdrop, the fairways are painted neon green under the lights and the holes take on an entirely different character. With plenty of refreshment stops along the way, this could be the best night-clubbing you do on your visit to Dubai.
